We are looking for a full time Finance Assistant to join our team in Chorley, Lancashire.

This is a full time, permanent position working Monday to Friday in a well-established Civil & Structural Engineering Practice.  We are offering a competitive salary based on the applicants experience.

Thomas Consulting have four offices across the UK – Chorley (Head Office), Lancaster, London and Shrewsbury.  The Finance department resides in the Chorley office and provides financial support for all office’s.

The successful candidate, will report to the Finance Manager  and will contribute to the overall success of the business.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing client accounts ensuring payments are made and dealing with billing discrepancies
  • Credit Control
  • Bank Reconciliations
  • Creating, sending, and following up on invoices
  • Reviewing and performing audits on financial statements and reports
  • Reporting discrepancies
  • Purchase Ledger including processing incoming invoices & supplier reconciliations
  • Various other Financial/Business Admin duties as directed

Essential Experience

  • Accounting or Finance
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Excel and accounting software, Sage 50
  • Strong knowledge of bookkeeping
  • Good organisational skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Detail-oriented
  • Excellent time management skills
  • A flexible approach and willingness to assist in other areas of administrative support where required

Desirable Experience:

  • A basic Finance/Accounting qualification

We are looking for an experienced Principal Civil Engineer to work within the existing team either in our London, Chorley, Lancaster or Shrewsbury office. If you are highly motivated and relish the challenge of a demanding role within an expanding team this could be what you have been looking for.

Ideally the candidate would have a minimum of three years’ experience within Highways and Drainage design.

About the position

The role involves mentoring graduate engineers and engineering technicians to assist on existing workload and developing their skillsets to meet the required needs and demands of our clients and business goals. Although the candidate will be based in one of our 4 offices, the team members are based in each office and work closely together assisting on projects where required, each engineer has a number of projects and clients at any one time to manage. You will be expected to support our Directors across the group.
Quality deliverables and client satisfaction are at the forefront of our everyday responsibilities as individuals, to ensure conformance to our accredited processes and procedures as recognised within the industry.

About the candidate we are seeking

The successful candidate must be chartered with either CIWEM, ICE and/or CIHT and will be required to ensure best practices are applied within the office and to assist the Directors with improving design services and operational efficiency.
In addition, maintaining the existing client base as well as generating new clients and areas of work would be expected.
The ideal individual must be self-motivated, driven by a challenge whilst continually learning new skills and has experience working within a team and is confident at communicating in a consultation environment.

Essential Experience required

  • Minimum three years’ experience within Highways and Drainage design
  • Proficient use of AutoCAD and Causeway Flow or equivalent design software
  • Producing detailed drainage and highway calculations and sketches
  • Following principals outlined in CIRIA design guides, BRE digest, BS EN752 and the Design and Construction Guidance
  • Working experience within the adoptable standards Section 278, Section 38 and 104
  • Commercial awareness of costing, budgets and quotations
  • Report writing
  • Site visits to verify construction complies with construction drawings
  • Preparing Specifications

As a Structural Project Engineer, you will play a crucial role in the planning, analysis, and design of building structures. You will work on a variety of projects, collaborating with architects, clients, and other professionals to ensure the successful execution of structural engineering solutions. You will also support the existing management team to help develop new and existing clients.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate good fundamental knowledge and understanding within the application and principles of structural engineering design.

About the candidate we are seeking

You must be self-motivated, driven by a challenge whilst continually developing new skills and sharing experience with the team.

Essential Experience required

  • Minimum three years’ experience within Structural design including steelwork, reinforced concrete and masonry construction to Euro Code standards
  • HNC in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Proficiency in structural analysis software and CAD tools
  • Design using Eurocodes and relevant British Standards to produce structural solutions using materials such as steel, concrete, timber, and masonry
  • Prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and reports for construction
  • Collaborate closely with architects, clients, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure project objectives are met
  • Ensure compliance with current building regulations and other industry standards
  • Monitor construction progress and provide technical support to resolve structural issues
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, calculations and records
  • Stay updated with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in structural engineering
  • Commercial awareness of costing, budgets and quotations
  • Site visits to verify construction complies with construction drawings

Desirable Experience

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil or Structural Engineering
  • Understanding of STAAD.Pro, SCIA and Revit
  • Project management and leadership skills
  • Willing to work towards or nearing Chartered Status
