Thomas Consulting have provided Civil and Structural Engineering Services to the Nuclear Industry for over 16 years. Our design work has included the design of new building structures including essential plant facilities, office accommodation, training facilities and workshops. We regularly undertake assessments of existing structures for the purposes of periodic plant maintenance.

Thomas Consulting have provided services in connection with 14 Statutory Reactor Outages across the eDF Energy Fleet. Our work includes the inspection and reporting upon the condition of existing structures including sea defence walls and Marine structures including piers and jetties.

Services have been provided for eDf Energy at Heysham 1 and 2, Sizewell, Torness and Hartlepool PowerStations and at Wylfa and Hunterston A Power Stations for Magnox. We have completed a number of high QA Grade projects involving Seismic Qualification of new and existing structures involving complex 3D dynamic modelling using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Our staff includes Chartered Engineers who are security vetted/ counter terrorist checked (CTC) and site inducted to work in Nuclear Installations.

Seismic Analysis

  • Seismic Analysis is undertaken in accordance with ASCE: 4-98; Seismic Analysis of Safety Related Nuclear Structures
  • Where required structures are designed for Seismic Loading Conditions encountered during a 1 x 10-4 event (earthquake)
  • Analysis is done via the SRSS Combination method using Response Spectra Graphs

3D Dynamic Analysis

  • Seismic Analysis using the SRSS method for given response spectra graphs is undertaken using STAAD Pro finite element software
  • Existing structures are checked in accordance with appropriate design codes and with due consideration to the age of the structure. This may include where necessary retrospective assessment to historical or obsolete codes of practice
  • Finite element analysis is also used when designing/checking plate elements and reinforced concrete structures
