Project Description

EDF Energy required a new Training and Skills Facility to offer educational and training workshop facilities for EDF apprentices and contractors. In addition, computer terminal facilities were required to permit personnel to be site inducted, offered additional training and site appraised prior to gaining access to the Nuclear Licensed Site.

The building contains three main workshops with adjoining classrooms and training areas. In addition there are two large classrooms as well as three smaller seminar / classroom spaces.

Due to the need for large open spaces and the requirement to achieve adequate robustness against disproportionate collapse (Building Regulation AD –A3 Category 2B Building), a steel frame was adopted. Due to the marginal ground conditions encountered on the site, a reinforced concrete raft foundation sub-structure was adopted.
